Why is the world unfair?
Oxfam Australia tackle some of the world‘s biggest problems – poverty, injustice and inequality. They approached Tone as they had the insight that it was becoming increasingly difficult for parents and caregivers to explain why the world is unfair for so many people.
Our brief was to create a tool to aid discussions and help children understand our world. By breaking down complex topics such as war, hunger, refugees and extreme drought into short, 4-page chapters, we empowered readers to have important discussions with the children in their lives. This easy to navigate, illustrated guide explains why this unfairness happens in a way that children can understand and process safely.
We used the rich and detailed Oxfam photo library to guide our illustrative approach. Each page has multiple access points into the content to aid skim readers, and keep younger children engaged.
The book was printed and offered as a free guide to Australian parents. It was a privilege to be involved in such an important project that helps our children grow and feel empowered to make a difference in our world. Together, we can make the world a more equal place, for everyone.

To reflect Oxfam’s commitment to diversity and equality, the book’s character illustrations represent a broad range of ethnicities, genders, abilities, and backgrounds. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone can see themselves in the story, fostering empathy, representation, and a deeper connection with the shared global community.
